Vitamin Shower – Easy DIY Shower Filter System

Posted by editor On June - 16 - 2013

All moms would agree that the most relaxing and comforting time is actually in the shower. It’s what IKEA ad campaign refers to as “ME-ing” and I simply call it : ME time.

Sadly, no matter how enjoyable it is most of us would not stay too long in a hot water shower or bath, because it can cause dryness to skin. I used to feel the itch after a hot shower and skin dryness follow there after, this is especially true during winter time. However I definitely notice a difference between having a shower filter install versus not. Last time I installed a simple chlorine filter attached to my shower head and notice my skin, especially in the face, is smoother and of course my hair is not as coarse.

I’m not very picky about which shower filter to install so a simple chlorine filter work just fine. The installation however is quite bothersome because the connection between the shower head and the filter doesn’t work too well resulting in water splash in between it even though I already did the rubber like plumbing tape around the joint. So this time around when I have to buy a new filter I decided to do a little research on best DYI shower filter and have to be easy install.

I discover this shower filter called the vitamin shower, quite doubtful at first because how do you suppose the filter will work just by having the water go through a dose of vitamin C powder? After a further read I discovered that Vitamin C does not hold chlorine, it neutralizes chlorine from an element into a harmless compound, so in other words it is a water de-chlorination agent. I thought this is great because we all accustom to consuming vitamin C so it should not do further harm to us if we are just merely splashing it to our body.

So I tried using this new vitamin shower filter, simply love it. Not only it doesn’t dry my skin but it is also easy to install and no more water leek from between the shower and the pipe. Here’s a peek to my vitamin shower:

You can see the vitamin C powder inside this translucent shower head pipe, generally it’s time to change when there’s no longer powder but just water in that orange pipe. Pretty convenient and easy to install, that’s the best thing I like about this filter.

Be Informed Prior To Vaccinate Your Little Ones

Posted by editor On June - 11 - 2013

I never question anything about vaccine and always trust authority figures until I have my own baby and a friend of mine happen to suggested me to not vaccine my baby too early due to various reasons. She then candidly shared her personal experience with me in where her daughter a young mother just like any other new young mothers: trust their doctors and think that whatever their pediatricians say is the best.

So her daughter vaccinated her grandson at the age of nine months and thereafter this little baby boy came down with severe fever. It was a severe adverse reaction to a regular flu vaccine in where later the baby boy ended up paralyzed and unable to move any more of his muscle as normal from the neck down. Of course I felt very devastating upon hearing the tragedy, which later lead me to inquire further about vaccine topics and hopefully bring awareness to young mothers and new parents to really know what they opt for before they decide to vaccinate their young ones.

Quite a favorite past time blog of mine called “MamaNatural” written series of posts on Vaccine:
this is her introduction to vaccines and you can find all complete post of vaccines topic here.

And I also happen to have a co-worker who gave birth just a couple of months earlier than I did and at that time when we spoke about babies and vaccine she told me she’ll wait to vaccinate her son because she just saw this award winning documentary on vaccine, called “The Greater Good Movie” and suggested that I should take a peek into it.

Of course I later watched it and thought it was not only very educative, but highlight other people’s personal stories on vaccine’s tragedy, quite heart breaking but nevertheless it bring about a new take and awareness on educating parents out there about vaccine. Hence would like to share with all of you:

You can download the streaming for $5.00 or buy the DVD for $20.00

For those wanting to watch more documentaries on vaccine there are another one called “Vaccine Nation” and “Vaccine Wars” and if you are keen to look for these videos you can always do a YouTube search sometimes they are available other times taken out due to copyright issues.

In Search For The Perfect Bed

Posted by editor On June - 8 - 2013

I have had my bed since when I am in college. After marriage my husband has his bed and I have my bed so we thought it’s not necessary to buy another bed. So after all those years we still sleep in what we think is a decent firm mattress. Little did we know that mattress with springs is not desirable at all. Here’s a quote from scientificamerican.com written by R. Douglas Fields, Ph. D. who is the Chief of the Nervous System Development and Plasticity Section at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to let you think further whether or not you should change your mattress:

Thus, as we sleep on our coil-spring mattresses, we are in effect sleeping on an antenna that amplifies the intensity of the broadcast FM/TV radiation. Asleep on these antennas, our bodies are exposed to the amplified electromagnetic radiation for a third of our life spans. As we slumber on a metal coil-spring mattress, a wave of electromagnetic radiation envelops our bodies so that the maximum strength of the field develops 75 centimeters above the mattress in the middle of our bodies. When sleeping on the right side, the body’s left side will thereby be exposed to field strength about twice as strong as what the right side absorbs.

If this study is correct, the solution is simple: Replace the metal in our beds with a nonmetallic mattress or orient your bed, like an antenna, away from the direction of the local FM/TV transmission tower. Call it high-tech feng shui if you like, but if this new study has not identified the cause of left-side cancer, it will, for some, be the cause of insomnia.

With the whole moving across continent we decided to pack light so mattresses are first thing to be off from our list. I am so happy to finally be able to buy new mattress and we decided to look for the organic, environmentally friendly mattress that help promote good health not the one with metal in it which can increase the chances of one developing a cancer. Most importantly for now one that can help us rest well because we spend at least six to eight hours everyday on bed so it would be silly not to invest in a good mattress.

Here down under we only find one company that does what we are after. Natural Bedding, a Sydney based family owned and operated company able to provide bedding with combination usage of natural latex, coir (rubberised coconut fibre core), and or pure australian down wools for filling materials and for coverage they use no harmful chemicals or glue, instead they hand stitched all these materials inside a 100% cotton cover.

Pictured above is my king sized bed. We opted for “supreme” type which is composed of coir in the center then sandwiched with latex and wool. After weeks sleeping in it I can say it makes a difference, at least my back pain is no longer there. For those who doesn’t like the firm mattress one grade softer is what is called the deluxe, pictured below is the composition of the deluxe bed you can see the latex layer is much thicker than the one in supreme.

If you co-sleeping with your baby it’s good to have the set up low like mine above but if that’s an issue then try to look for wood based bed furniture as it’s much friendlier and healthier for you as suppose to the metal frame ones.

They also carry baby mattress for baby’s crib, basically just coir and wool. It’s always good to let your baby sleep on harder surface for their back bone development. Here’s a sample of it I’m holding in the store:

Best Portable Water Filter Purification System

Posted by editor On June - 4 - 2013

Recently I need to relocate due to job, so I’m currently renting. Of course nothing like owning your own place where you can practically instal reverse osmosis, water softener and carbon filter for the whole house or just for the typical small little faucet on the kitchen, of course this involved drilling the counter top. So since I can’t have my customize installation of the water filtration system, first thing first I went to a supermarket and grab a 1.5L Brita pitcher.

Then after I did my homework and try to dig in further for world’s best portable water filter I run into this Berkey filter. It’s commercialized more as a survival tool, the red-cross use it, army and such a kind, because it can filter water from non-drinkable source such as swamp, lake, etc and turn it into a pure drinkable water.

If you are living in the area where clean water access is not a problem, and tap water is acceptable for direct consumption,  then maybe filtering water is not something that comes to mind right away. Although that’s the case, I notice a different especially when showering in non filtered vs filtered water, my facial skin is much better and I never get dry skin with filter water even during winter season. So I figure it must be best to always filter the drinking water. I am also safety freak, especially because I am a nursing mother now.

I used to drink bottled water every time, thinking not only it’s convenient but believe it is cleaner. A while back I watched a documentary on our water called tapped, this shocked me on how poorly bottled water regulates and it contains high level of harmful and toxic materials that we can’t see. Tapped also mentioned that drinking tap water is better because the municipality usually regulate that stricter than bottled water. However if you dig into it further they only regulates so much and in some countries fluoride is still roaming free in your drinkable tap water. Well if you think fluoride is great for your child’s teeth like all dentists recommend to parents to make sure they give their little ones fluoride until the age of four because that is what helping the development of strong teeth. Then try to read this paragraph quoted from huffingtonpost.com:

Even more disturbing, there was a study done in China on children with fluorosis, and the findings were that children with the affliction had, in overall terms, lower IQ scores. These findings were echoed in an American study that came to the same findings using animals: The study concluded that fluoride would accumulate in specific areas of the brain, which then affected the ability to learn. This does not constitute irrefutable proof, but it does make one think.

Putting fluoride aside, there are other concerns with our drinking water is too pure hence we’re not getting enough mineral we need anymore. Sally Falon from Weston Price foundation suggested to put salt into our drinking water so we can get enough minerals that we need. Of course you need to make sure you’re using pure salt (unprocessed salt). I think it’s a bit bothersome so I try to just use more salt in my cooking to get even. But when I read about Berkey water filtration system only eliminates harmful substances, virus and bacteria, etc but not the useful mineral that the body needs from the water, then I am very much interested in replacing my Brita pitcher with one of that.

That was exactly what I did and I got mine already, and did blind water testing taste of course Berkey won my taste bud as suppose to Brita. Pretty hard to tell the difference but yes there’s a different and Berkey water taste better. Anyhow this blog post summarize why he loved his Berkey, you can read all about it here.

Here’s a couple shot of my Berkey:

What do we all consider to be a healthy eating?
Most of us would definitely give the typical SAD (standard American diet) answer which is to avoid fatty and greasy foods and consume more greens, lots of fruits with some lean meats.

So why America – the 5th lowest smoking rate among developed country and the lowest fat consumption per capita – suffers the highest obesity rate in the world and more over, heart attack listed as the number one hospital death cause in the country? Part of the hidden truth is because of what we’ve been told all along from the American dietary and nutritional guidelines has been skewed. Here’s the info-graphics that clearly explained why we get fat.

If you want in-depth information there is this article entitled “Enjoy Saturated Fats, They’re Good for You!” by by Donald W. Miller, Jr., MD a cardiac surgeon and a professor.

Buying safe cosmetic products will benefit your health

Posted by editor On July - 5 - 2009

Before you buy any cosmetic or make-up products be sure to know its compositions & ingredients because some of its ingredients may be harmful to your body. I recently buy some cosmetic products from “make up forever, Paris” but after going home and research I found this article from Fitsugar.com and decide to return these products.

Toxic and harmful things inside cosmetic ingredients label that you might want to avoid:

1. Methyl, Propyl, Butyl and Ethyl Parabens: Used as a preservative to inhibit microbial growth and extend shelf life. Preliminary research found parabens in human breast cancer tumors.

2. Diethanolamine (DEA), Triethanolamine (TEA): Foaming agents that can cause allergic reactions, eye irritation, and dryness of the hair and skin. DEA and TEA are toxic if absorbed into the body over a long period of time, and are associated with cancer in lab animals.

3. Diazolidinyl Urea, Imidazolidinyl Urea: Often used as preservatives, the American Academy of Dermatology has found these chemicals to be a primary cause of contact dermatitis (irritation caused by foreign substance). Both these chemicals release formaldehyde, which can be toxic.

4. Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate: This is a cheap, harsh detergent used in many shampoos for its ability to cleanse and foam. Often derived from petroleum, it causes eye irritation, dry scalp, skin rashes and other allergic reactions. Be on the lookout for pseudo-natural products that list this ingredient with the phrase “comes from coconuts” – it’s still bad for you.

5. Petrolatum: Also known as petroleum jelly, this is a mineral oil derivative that can clog your pores. This in turn disrupts your body’s natural ability to moisturize its own skin, leading to dryness and chapping. Manufacturers use it because it’s really inexpensive. Want to know what else you should avoid? Then read more

6. Propylene Glycol: Ideally this is a vegetable glycerin mixed with grain alcohol, both of which are natural, but it’s usually made from synthetic chemicals. It has been known to cause hives and eczema. Beware of related chemicals labeled PEG and PPG.

7. PVP/VA Copolymer: A petroleum-derived chemical that’s used in hair styling products and some cosmetics. Considered toxic since if inhaled, it can damage the lungs.

8. Stearalkonium Chloride: This toxic chemical was designed by the fabric industry for use as a fabric softener. Companies use it in hair conditioners and lotions because it’s much cheaper than natural conditioning ingredients such as proteins.

9. Synthetic Colors: Labeled as FD&C or D&C and followed by a number, these make products look pretty but can be carcinogenic.

10. Synthetic Fragrances: Labeled simply as “fragrance,” there’s no way to tell what chemicals are actually in the product. People can get headaches, dizziness, rashes, and respiratory problems from them. People may also experience hyper-pigmentation, which means this chemical may cause brown spots to form on your skin.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate in Soap Products (Cancer causing chemical)

Independent laboratory test tested 48 products, including baby shampoos, bubble baths, baby lotions, for 1,4-dioxane (dioxin).  Measurable level of chemicals showed up in 67 percent of samples. Even top products, such as Johnson’s Baby Shampoo and Sesame Street Bubble Bath, contained both chemicals.

Many shampoos, soap, and baby bath bubbles products may contain chemicals linked to cancerNone of the tested products listed formaldehyde or 1,4-dioxane as ingredients in their packaging, because they are not subject to FDA labeling laws. However, common ingredients such as Sodium Laureth Sulfate, PEG-100 Stearate, Polyethylene and Ceteareth-20 . All these chemicals may produce the toxic chemicals causing cancer since they are processed with the carcinogen called “Ethylene Oxide”.

Also, certain chemical preservatives, such as quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, and diazolidinyl urea, release formaldehyde over time in product containers.

Unlike many other countries, there are no laws that limit formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane or other toxic chemicals in personal care products (soaps, cosmetics, shampoos) sold in the United States, even though safer alternatives exist; in the United States, FDA does not regulate these chemicals, that are linked to cancer, birth defects, and adverse health effects.

The problems with these products are that these products (soap products) are used every day, so consumers get frequent and repeated exposure to these low levels of chemicals.
Many chemical-free alternatives and consumers are advised to choose ones that are less toxic.

Cancer and Chemicals In Our Daily Life (BPA, Dioxin)

Posted by editor On May - 30 - 2009

Cancer causing chemical called \"BPA\" exist in metal can containers and beverage cans, and also in plastic food storage containers, baby bottles, water bottles. Cancer and Chemicals In Our Daily Life (BPA, Dioxin)

No more than 10 percent of breast cancers are genetic, and science increasingly points to toxic chemicals and radiation as factors in the sharp rise of breast cancer incidence.
Bisphenol A, or BPA has gotten a lot of bad press lately. BPA is a toxic chemical that is presently perfectly legal for use in food and beverage containers, mainly canned food.

Presently there is a bill that would ban BPA in food and beverage containers . Health Canada released research results showing that BPA was detected in 96 percent of the soft drink cans that the agency tested. Main routes of exposure to BPA is through food and beverage containers. BPA is used as epoxy resin that lines metal food cans and is also found in plastic food storage containers, baby bottles, and water bottles.

BPA can leech into food especially when heated, so do not microwave plastic containers in the microwave. Nearly 200 scientific studies show that exposures to low level of BPA, particularly during prenatal development (during pregnancy) and early childhood (when the kid is particularly infant or still young) are associated with a wide range of adverse health effects later in life, including: breast cancer, prostate cancer, birth defects, infertility in men, early puberty in girls, diabetes, and obesity.

How to reduce your family’s exposure to BPA (Toxic chemical causing cancer):

  • Check your kids’ plastic containers for “#7 containers”
Many manufacturers have stopped selling baby bottles with BPA, but you may have old plastic bottles that contain BPA. Check the code on the bottom of the plastics and replace “#7 plastics” with glass . Also do not use plastic cups, dishes, utensils and replace them with other alternatives.
  • Choose fresh or frozen food over canned food.
Soups, beans, infant formula, and other food packages may leech BPA from the can lining,
  • Don’t microwave plastic containers .
Heat and wear increase leaching of chemicals from plastics.

Try to Google for “BPA and cancer” if you are interested in reading more about this topic.

Swine Flue case in Bay Area

Posted by editor On May - 1 - 2009

Yesterday I heard the radio local news stated there are total of 3 reported cases in Bay Area including 1 from San Jose and 2 others in San Mateo county. I checked the online SF gate/ San Francisco Chronicles this morning and see there are total of 11 reported case of swine flu.

Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza virus and does not normally infect humans, according to federal health authorities. Typically, when people have gotten it, it’s because they came in direct contact with pigs. But this particular strain has been spreading from human to human.

Signs of possible swine flu

*Flulike symptoms, including fever, sore throat, cough, and possibly vomiting and diarrhea.
*Recent travel to Mexico or contact with someone who has been to Mexico recently.
*Recent travel to San Diego or Imperial counties in Southern California, or contact with someone from there.

My co-worker had to call his wife yesterday to pick up their son from local a San Jose school because of the reported case of swine flu near-by. The school already issue a reqiuire shut-down for a week.
It’d be difficult to go anywhere if this get worse just like in Mexico people have to stay at their house, no school or restaurant allow to open. Well I hope it doesn’t get to be that worse but I already went to costco and stock up some canned food just in case…  =D
